The '''Sound Blaster 16 ASP''' is an enhancement to the original [[Creative Sound Blaster 16|SB16]] that introduces a signal processing chip. This was supposed to provide hardware compression and decompression of audio, however it proved to be a short-lived addition as later cards dropped this capability - presumably due to increasing CPU speeds and the fact that the majority of audio was synthesised in real-time (e.g. in games) rather than being pre-recorded.
Presumably when the amplifier is enabled the output jack becomes a "speaker out", whereas a disabled amplifier will change the jack to a "line out" with the volume control nonfunctional, with presumably less noise on the output also.
